A waxing moon took UC Berkeley's Sproul Plaza for a rumble. The toppled flood light, it's generator spilling fossil fuel to feed a fire, involved a tree in the blaze, but no one spoke out against environmental degradation. Instead, nonviolent protestors carried their signs -- “Hate Speech is not Free Speech.”
They did not set fires or break windows. Did not hurl rocks and burning fireworks at campus police. That was the business of black hooded interlopers sent to torpedo a speech by Breitbart Editor Milo Yiannopoulos, who had come to hail Trump in a very un-Trump place.
Campus authorities cancelled the event to forestall mounting disorder and further damage. Milo was spirited away. At the birthplace of the Free Speech Movement, he had effectively been censored.
Imagine walking to your dorm room and running into a pack of wolves baying at the moon. Sirens, fireworks, the perilous trek home, everyone shouting righteous slogans. All juiced by drums, electric guitars, quite a show, and reminiscent of a rock concert or a Trump rally.
When the fire extinguisher fog cleared, a police bull horn blasted for everyone to disperse. Or stragglers would be arrested for unlawful assembly. But the miasma of Madison's nightmare was not to be so easily dispelled. Maybe in tomorrow's brilliant sun, gloom and anger on the run, some illusion of time modulating a rhythm of fallen leaves, having sung their night in orbit. Or the climate changing with its slower pulse. Burning man in the desert had been teleported, ignoring space, inspired by the pandemonium, amping up courage for wounds in a cause. Bring it on, smash the enemy! Celebrate victory, the downfall . . .
Drums trembled into fleeting distance, will there be some rain? Channel 5 had abandoned it's Paul Deanno forecast in favor of chaos closer to the ground, me-ness of selfies, bolts of Armageddon hurled or repealed scripture, yoga practices, electric tooth brushes. A cure for lightning and tornadoes?
Straw man media.
Winter's essential heat dissipates through the top of the skull, though the mind there discerns no without or within. There is no flood light to flip.
Gratitude for a knit cap.
