Some sort of oddity, here in Birdland. Truly weird. Without a broad base, it's going to tumble. Call it a hayloft on stilts.
Call it haiku as the earth convulses. Cherry trees dropping petals like snow. The Blossom Hill stage set for its usual audience, but now it's out of joint. Offstage the forces of nuclear weapons are assembled in secret silos, nations threaten each other with global winter to freeze survivors, or compare the hell of climate change, which is stricken from the script. No secret for anyone looking out their window.
The scale of it is a mite biting a flea biting an elephant's ear. Or divide the Pacific ocean by Olympic swimming pools, how many? Or how about a summer vacation on the sun? At light speed, just about 8 minutes away.
Facts are cold. Meanings are hot. A thermodynamic relation promises profit in the short run, entropy down the line. There's no success like failure, and failure is . . . no corporation at all? The mashup might yield a balm for convulsions?
Tally all the previous final hours that have gotten us this far. The accounting could be deemed a bottom line upon which the climate does not sizzle, or where nuclear winter is a breeze. Factor in extraordinary expenses to forestall riots – washing oil off birds, renewing marshlands, reseeding forests – and the climate shrugs.
It's a well oiled machine that keeps the trains running, profits flowing. Cars running. Refrigerators. Air conditioners. Dissent silenced. Truth off stage. Speak not of entropy, do not shout during the 8 minutes, things will balance out won't they?
The structure teeters. Where are the haiku about coal loaders or quantum computers?
The bookkeeper might get fired, but a few crickets remain. These backyard moments are as precious as water for Basho's frog, or for washing dirty feet, or for making green tea. And all you nations – China, Britain, Russia or US First, fiercely assembled -- the hayloft will go up in flames.
Blossom Hill in Los Gatos has seen its blossoms blown away, the Road Runner bulldozing rocks, entertainment for a wide audience.
Green tea is delicious. The sound of wind and rain drowns out construction on El Camino.
