DARK MATTER
WINTER ON THE WEST COAST IS ITCHY DRY
and sixty five degrees
a mass of cold air spreads over the east
snapping trees
dust settles in the street
lizards scamper
a man wearing tennis shoes, neither young nor old
slightly bent
progresses slowly
seen everywhere but scarcely noticed
he carries a 24-Hour Fitness duffel bag
which seems rather heavy for his slender frame
he opens the bag, reaches inside, pulls a string
New York becomes a mushroom cloud
slowly but surely
Noah's flood returns
but not as slowly as expected
spin doctors wobble the debate*
naysayers are counterprofit, they say
*(for a consideration of course)
perhaps a vacation in Haiti
or a cruise down the Amazon.com river
tax free, beyond rendition
world order is beyond the reach of world leaders
so called
derivative doctors have tunneled into the sea
far beneath the serenity of meditation
pushing a future of whose choosing?
world order
our fortunes sinking in a maelstrom of greed
nothing said here
not a morning song
nor the panorama of a national poem
will compare with a supernova
let our world change, endure for a time, exclude us, disappear
til then
this rhyme
a stitch in time or
dust?
CIVILIZED DISCOURSE
people converge upon the capitol
as seems appropriate in a democracy
to discuss whether mountain lions or robots have rights
who can speak
and who cannot
red sky at night
sailor's delight
smooth sailing is not
the future of a bumble bee
as long as chaos is parsed in conventional terms
it seems almost reasonable
to wit
the above
but beware
the universe doesn't care
the parade, though, must go on
mustn't it?
parade goers mark your places
marchers strut your stuff
strike up the band
blast the starting whistle
ignore the wounded and dying
moaning
eerie radioactive quiet
ashes
all in a day's dream
sale pending
bankers preen
days of superstition are over
the marking off of domains
like urine on a lamp post
is either history
or kaput
in either case
experience is the best teacher
and it is painful
