ON THE FROND
There are people like me. If I was like me what would I be like?
Creative. Not very interested in the Standard Model of whatever. Patient. The whatever will not be a deliberate fabrication but will emerge on its own. Might be a garden. A piece of music, different every time. Words that collaborate with images.
Imagination. Not the kind that solves puzzles, certainly not cleverness, but that just lets the mind free. A slow paced untethered horse.
Eventually an unmarked field is entered. Boundless depth of ordinary life, an awareness unplumbed by people waiting for the light to go green
People like me are not bored. Do not write manifestos or carry placards, realizing that the nuclear stalemate, planetary destruction, social injustice, economic prerogatives of civilized absurdity can all leave adolescence whenever people want to grow up. People like me are not very numerous but we do exist, vaguely wondering where the rest are, realizing that, like me, there is no hurry. Haste makes waste.
For us, most forms of fiction are irrelevant. There is enough going on in the world that is intrinsically pointless. Why bother with reshuffling the deck? The same hand gets dealt over and over anyway, same cards, it's a pastime for people who are stuck in time. People like me do not object to daylight savings time, except to engage politely in pointless conversations, because there is no time to save. In a friendly way, you understand. Set your clocks ahead. Brush your teeth. People like me do all this stuff and are not bored because each moment is new. The dimensions of things are temporary. Flowers are beautiful even as they wilt. Seeds sprout because that's what they do.
People like me like to write, as I think I said, because it's both pointless, 'cause words won't do, and necessary since that's the code, and 'cause something somehow pushes that we can't account for. It's a mystery. We like this mystery. And it's not just some altruistic exercise in futility.
There are perhaps one or a few who'll read this and think, oh yeah! That's like me! And probably I won't hear from them.
